Good to know before you book
Arrive acclimatized. Spend at least 5 days in Cusco first: from the very first night you sleep above 4,500 m (14,800 ft), and all three nights at about 4,500–4,700 m (14,800–15,400 ft).
Watch for altitude sickness. A headache or poor sleep on the first night is normal. The guide checks on you and carries oxygen, and if it gets worse, you head down.
Nights freeze. Expect below 0 °C (32 °F) every night, colder from June to August, and snow or hail in any month. Sleep in your thermal layers.
Three long days and two passes. Days 1 to 3 are 12–16 km (7–10 mi) each, with passes near 4,900 m (16,000 ft). Day 4 is shorter but starts before dawn.
Clouds have the last word. Ausangate, the lagoon or Rainbow Mountain can be covered at any time, even on a dry-season morning.
Basic camps. No showers and no electricity, just simple toilets. For three nights, wet wipes are your shower.
No phone signal. There is little or no signal after Pacchanta.
Bring cash from Cusco. There are no ATMs on the route, and the fees and tips are paid in soles.
Tipping is the custom for the cook and the horsemen, who travel and work with you all 4 days.
7 kg goes on the horses. The rest of your luggage stays at your hotel in Cusco.
Ask before you take photos of local people. Some will ask for a small tip, especially with alpacas at Rainbow Mountain.
Who should skip it. Minimum age is 15. Skip it if you've never hiked at high altitude or haven't acclimatized, and it's not recommended if you're pregnant or have heart or serious breathing conditions. For one night less, see the 3-day trek.
About the 4-day Ausangate trek and Rainbow Mountain
Ausangate (6,384 m) is the mountain that Cusco looks up to. For the Quechua families who herd alpacas below it, it's an apu, a living mountain spirit. On this trek you walk halfway around it, from its northern lakes to the glacier on its southern side, and you finish on top of Rainbow Mountain.
Day 1 starts in Pacchanta, a herding village at 4,330 m, about 3 hours' drive from Cusco. From there you walk up to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate, glacier lakes in turquoise, deep blue and rusty red, one after another below the ice. After lunch on the trail, you keep walking to your first camp, where dinner is hot and the stars come out early.
Day 2 takes you to the far side of the mountain. You climb to a pass near 4,900 m (16,000 ft), the kind of climb where you count your steps, and then walk down to the Ausangate lagoon (about 4,630 m), right below the southern glacier. Very few travelers make it here: no road reaches it, and there's no day tour.
Day 3 is when the colors change. You leave the ice behind and walk through valleys of red and ochre earth to Anantapata (about 4,700 m). Your camp there faces the striped slopes of Rainbow Mountain, ready for the next morning.
Day 4 starts in the dark, with a headlamp. You cross the Warmisaya pass and reach the summit of Vinicunca (5,036 m) early, before the day tours from Cusco. After your photo you can add the Red Valley, then you walk down to lunch and the van, and you're back in Cusco by about 6 PM.
Ausangate Trek 4 Days or 3 Days?
Both treks start at the 7 Lakes and end on Rainbow Mountain. The 4-day trek adds the far side of Ausangate: a night beside the Ausangate lagoon, under the southern glacier, and one more high pass. The 3-day trek takes a shorter route via the Upis hot springs. Choose 4 days if you want the glacier lagoon and a quieter trail; choose 3 days if you're short on time.
Two faces of Ausangate
North face, day 1: the 7 Lakes, the busiest part of the trek, also visited on day tours from Cusco.
South face, day 2: the Ausangate lagoon, under the glacier, only reachable on foot over several days.
"Qocha" means lake in Quechua. You'll see it on every sign: Ausangate Qocha is the "lake of Ausangate", and Hatun Puka Qocha, which you pass on day 2, is the "big red lake".
What is the itinerary of the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
The Ausangate Trek 4 Days goes from the 7 Lakes to Rainbow Mountain, about 50 km (31 mi) on foot. Day 1: the 7 Lakes loop (14–16 km). Day 2: a high pass and the Ausangate lagoon camp (12–14 km). Day 3: red valleys to Anantapata (15–16 km). Day 4: Rainbow Mountain early, then Cusco (6–8 km).
What is the highest point of the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
The highest point of the Ausangate Trek 4 Days is the summit of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), 5,036 m (16,522 ft), where you stand on day 4 above its striped ridges. Before that you cross passes close to 4,900 m (16,000 ft) and sleep three nights between about 4,500 and 4,700 m (14,800–15,400 ft), within sight of the glacier.
Ausangate Trek 4 Days vs the Inca Trail: which is harder?
The Ausangate Trek 4 Days is harder than the classic Inca Trail, mostly because of altitude. The Inca Trail tops out at 4,215 m (13,829 ft) and camps below 3,600 m (11,800 ft). On Ausangate you sleep three nights above 4,500 m (14,800 ft), wake up to frost on your tent, and finish on Rainbow Mountain at 5,036 m (16,522 ft).
Is the Ausangate Trek 4 Days worth it?
Yes, if you want more than the 7 Lakes and the Rainbow Mountain photo. On the Ausangate Trek 4 Days you also camp beside the Ausangate lagoon, under the southern glacier, on a trail with few other groups. Skip it if you can't spend at least 5 days acclimatizing in Cusco first.
Ausangate Trek 4 Days vs 5 Days: which should I choose?
Choose the Ausangate Trek 4 Days if you want the 7 Lakes, the Ausangate lagoon and Rainbow Mountain in the least time. Choose the 5-day trek if you prefer a slower pace or the full circuit around the mountain. Both treks camp in tents, and both need at least 5 days of acclimatization in Cusco first.
Can you do the Ausangate Trek 4 Days in November?
Yes, you can do the Ausangate Trek 4 Days in November, but it's the start of the rainy season. Mornings are often clearer, while afternoons can bring clouds, rain or hail, and some stretches get muddy. The driest months are May to September, and nights are coldest from June to August. Pack rain gear whatever the month.
Where do you sleep on the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
On the Ausangate Trek 4 Days you sleep three nights in tents, with a sleeping bag rated to −5 °C (23 °F) included. Night 1 is after the 7 Lakes, night 2 beside the Ausangate lagoon (about 4,630 m / 15,190 ft), and night 3 at Anantapata (about 4,700 m / 15,420 ft), facing Rainbow Mountain.
How much does the Ausangate Trek 4 Days cost in total?
The Ausangate Trek 4 Days costs $400 per person (2026), with your tent, sleeping bag, pack horses and 11 meals from your trek cook already included. On the trail you pay S/ 90 (about US$25) in community fees, in cash, plus S/ 30 if you add the Red Valley, tips for the crew and your day 4 dinner in Cusco.
Can beginners do the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
Not as a first trek. The Ausangate Trek 4 Days is best if you've already hiked at high altitude, because from the very first night you sleep above 4,500 m (14,800 ft), within sight of the glacier. Plan at least 5 days acclimatizing in Cusco, and expect 12–16 km (7–10 mi) a day on days 1 to 3. The minimum age is 15.
How do you get from Cusco to the start of the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
Round-trip transport from Cusco's historic center is included in the Ausangate Trek 4 Days. The van leaves at 5:00 AM and drives about 3 hours, the last stretch with Ausangate in view, to Pacchanta (4,330 m / 14,200 ft), where you lace up your boots and start walking. After Rainbow Mountain on day 4, you're back in Cusco by about 6 PM.
How should I train for the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
Start training 6 to 8 weeks before the Ausangate Trek 4 Days, so you enjoy the passes instead of just surviving them. Do 2 or 3 cardio sessions a week (running, cycling or stairs) and weekend hikes of 4–6 hours with steep climbs and a daypack, in the boots you'll trek in. Then spend at least 5 days acclimatizing in Cusco.
Do you need a permit for the Ausangate Trek 4 Days?
No. Unlike the Inca Trail, the Ausangate Trek 4 Days needs no government permit and has no daily quota. You only pay community entrance fees in cash on the trail, S/ 90 per person (2026), to the Quechua villages whose pastures you walk through, past their alpacas and stone corrals. The area is protected as the Ausangate Regional Conservation Area.

Ausangate 4j

Recomendo demais a empresa. Excelente custo-benefício, equipe muito boa, ótima organização e uma comunicação que realmente faz diferença.

I can absolutely recommend this trip for an authentic Andean experience. I was with the group "Fantásticos" guided by Robenheo who took our group through the incredible landscape near the Ausangate massif and the 7 Lakes. Robenheo always made sure the group had a great time and the pictures he takes of you are the absolute best. Can totally recommend.

Magnificent trek and hard working trek team
We had a magnificent 5 day trek with Ausangate Guide and I would recommend this company to book your trek with. The company were well organised and accommodated our request to avoid rainbow mountain and complete the full circuit in 4 days.
The trek team (Inti and Wilbert) get 5 stars for professionalism, skill and effort.
Our guide Inti was very professional. He looked after us and ensured our needs were met. He passed on lots of his local knowledge about the mountains and the local wildlife which was interesting. We always felt safe and the pace of the trek was matched to our fitness levels.
Our porter and chef worked incredibly hard to transport our gear and ensure we were well fed. The food was basic, but hearty with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and snacks.
The only reason this is not a 5 star review overall is because the sleeping bags were a little small (we are not big people but couldn’t fully zip them up) which made us cold at night. Inti was able to provide extra blankets on one occasion which was much appreciated.
The logistics on the final day could also have been better as we ended up waiting for 4 hours after lunch for a mini bus to take us back to Cusco. We had already visited the hot springs before lunch so a longer final walk or an afternoon activity would have been good.
Overall though this was a great and budget friendly experience. I highly recommend this trek.

Amazing experience!
An unforgettable 3-day Ausangate trek!
I had an incredible experience on the 3-day Ausangate trek with this company. Every day was filled with breathtaking scenery—from turquoise glacial lakes to stunning mountain landscapes. It was easily one of the highlights of my trip to Peru.
Our guide, Inti, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and made sure everyone felt safe and enjoyed the trek. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does and takes pride in sharing the beauty and history of the region.
A huge thank you to our cook, Esteban. I honestly couldn’t believe the quality and quantity of the food we had while camping in the mountains. Every meal was delicious, and there was always plenty to eat. They also kept us well supplied with water and snacks throughout the trek, which made a big difference.
The entire trip was extremely well organized. The logistics were seamless, allowing us to simply enjoy the adventure without worrying about anything.
I would 100% recommend this company to anyone looking to hike Ausangate. It was a beautiful, unforgettable experience, and I would gladly book with them again. Thank you, Inti, Esteban, and the entire team for making this such an amazing adventure!

We did the 7 lake tour here and it was the best Tour I did around Cusco. I did it with a friend of mine and we had such an amazing time and an amazing tour guide called Tony. He prepared us very well with the information about the tour, the history, it was in general really fun with him and he took care of the whole group.
We drive 3h there, had breakfast and then we got ready for an amazing 6h hike hahaha the views as you can see in the pictures were more than beautiful. The hike itself was nice but I would say on intermediate difficulty. I still recommend it to everyone if you can manage it.
After the hike we ate lunch and to rest our muscles there was a thermal bath nearby 😎 enjoy.

Three day Ausangate trek with Saddain
My partner and I set out for a three day Ausangate trip after our trip was delayed because of unexpected sickness. Jonathan was kind enough to send us off a few days later at no extra charge!!! He took care of us while I was sick and made sure I was ok.
Saddain, our guide, was nothing short of exceptional. He made sure we were always feeling well, and even insisted on taking an extra horse in case I wasn't strong enough for the tougher parts of the trail. He was very knowledgeable about the mountain and generally- telling us stories about the Inka, and different Peruvian folklore about the stars. He offered to start our final day extremely early (3 am) so we could get to rainbow mountain before the crowds- a very smart suggestion! We got to experience rainbow mountain nearly empty- something not many people get to experience. He made sure we were always feeling well and was overall a pleasure to be around.
Our cook Angel prepared exceptional meals for us, always adding an extra touch of care (preparing hot water for us to wash our hands before each meal, or preparing two chicken dishes- one spicy and one not- in the same meal). Our horseman was also extremely kind and caring.
Overall an exceptional experience- would recommend Saddain as a guide and Jonathan’s agency to anyone who is looking for an unforgettable experience in the mountains.
