Good to know before you book
Acclimatize first. Spend at least 3 days in Cusco: you sleep two nights above 4,400 m (14,400 ft).
Altitude can still hit. A headache and low appetite on the first night are common. The guide checks on you and carries oxygen; if symptoms get worse, you descend.
Nights are freezing. Below 0 °C (32 °F), colder from June to August, and snow or hail can fall in any month. Sleep in your thermal layers.
Long days. Days 1 and 2 are about 16 km (10 mi) each, and day 3 starts before dawn.
Weather decides the views. Clouds can hide Ausangate or Rainbow Mountain, even at sunrise.
Camps are basic. No showers or electricity, and simple toilets. The Upis hot springs are your bath (S/ 20, paid separately).
Little or no phone signal after Pacchanta.
No ATMs after Cusco. Bring cash for the fees and tips.
Tips are customary for the cook and horsemen, who carry and cook the whole trek.
The 7 kg is for the horses. The rest of your luggage stays at your hotel in Cusco.
Ask before photographing locals. Some ask for a small tip, for example with their alpacas at Rainbow Mountain.
Who should skip it. Minimum age is 15. It's not for people with no hiking experience, or anyone who hasn't acclimatized, and it's not recommended during pregnancy or with heart or serious breathing conditions.
Most travelers see Rainbow Mountain on a day trip: a pickup before dawn, a crowded trail and a quick photo. This trek takes you there on foot, over three days below the glacier of Ausangate (6,384 m), the highest and most sacred mountain in Cusco.
Day 1 starts in Pacchanta, a Quechua herding village at 4,330 m, where you have breakfast after the drive from Cusco. From there you walk the loop of the 7 Lakes of Ausangate, glacier-fed lakes in shades of turquoise, blue and red, then continue to Upis, your first camp, right below the north face of the mountain. Before dinner you can soak in the Upis hot springs, close to the camp area: two natural pools at 40–50 °C.
Day 2 is the big one. You climb to the Arapa pass (4,850 m), the highest point of the trek before Rainbow Mountain, and cross high valleys where alpacas graze far from any road. The day ends at Anantapata (about 4,700 m), a camp facing the striped slopes you'll climb the next morning.
Day 3 starts in the dark, with a headlamp. You reach the summit of Vinicunca (5,036 m) at sunrise, from the back side, while the day-tour groups are still on the road from Cusco. After your photo, you can add the Red Valley, then walk down to the van and return to Cusco by about 6 PM.

Ausangate Trek 3 Days: your questions answered
How long is the Ausangate Trek 3 Days?
The Ausangate Trek 3 Days covers about 40 km (25 mi) over 3 days and 2 nights. Days 1 and 2 are about 16 km (10 mi) each, with 6 to 7 hours of walking. Day 3 is shorter, 6 to 8 km to Rainbow Mountain and down to the vehicle, and you're back in Cusco by about 6 PM.
How do you do the Ausangate trek to Rainbow Mountain?
The shortest Ausangate trek to Rainbow Mountain takes 3 days: you start in Pacchanta, camp at Upis and Anantapata, and reach Vinicunca (5,036 m) on foot at sunrise on day 3. Longer versions of 4 to 6 days add the high passes of the full Ausangate circuit before the detour to Rainbow Mountain.
How hard is the Ausangate Trek 3 Days?
The Ausangate Trek 3 Days is challenging because of altitude, not technique. You sleep two nights above 4,400 m (14,400 ft), cross the Arapa pass at 4,850 m (15,900 ft) and finish at 5,036 m (16,500 ft). The trails are clear and not steep for long. If you hike regularly and spend 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco, you can do it.
How cold is it at night on the Ausangate trek?
Nights on the Ausangate trek drop below 0 °C (32 °F) all year, and lower in June to August, when frost covers the tents. Your sleeping bag is rated to −5 °C (23 °F). Sleep in your thermal layers and a beanie, and add a liner if you get cold easily.
Can you do the Ausangate trek in December or February?
Yes, the Ausangate trek runs all year, but December to March is the rainy season. Expect afternoon rain, muddy trails and sometimes snow on the passes, with fewer hikers and greener valleys. May to September is drier and colder, with clearer mornings. Bring full rain gear in any month.
How much are the entrance fees on the Ausangate Trek 3 Days?
The community fees on the Ausangate Trek 3 Days add up to S/ 90 per person (2026), paid in cash: S/ 20 for the 7 Lakes, S/ 20 at Upis, S/ 20 at Anantapata and S/ 30 at Rainbow Mountain. The Red Valley is an optional S/ 30. There are no ATMs after Cusco, so bring small notes.
Ausangate Trek 3 Days vs a Rainbow Mountain day tour: which is better?
A Rainbow Mountain day tour is quicker: one long day, about 2 hours of hiking, and the summit at mid-morning with most of the crowds. The Ausangate Trek 3 Days takes longer but gives you the summit at sunrise, the 7 Lakes, the Upis hot springs and two nights under Ausangate. Choose the day tour for time, the trek for the adventure.
Ausangate Trek 3 Days vs 2 Days: what's the difference?
The Ausangate Trek 3 Days is a camping trek that reaches Rainbow Mountain on foot, crossing the Arapa pass. The 2-day tour drives between Rainbow Mountain and the 7 Lakes and sleeps in a guesthouse in Pacchanta, with no camping. Choose 3 days for the trek and the sunrise; choose 2 days for a bed and less walking.
Do I carry my own gear on the Ausangate Trek 3 Days?
No, on the Ausangate Trek 3 Days horses carry up to 7 kg of your gear, plus the tents, kitchen and food. You walk with a daypack holding water, layers, rain gear, snacks and your camera. Pack the 7 kg in a soft bag; the rest of your luggage stays at your hotel in Cusco.
Can you do the Ausangate trek without a guide?
Experienced backpackers do hike the Ausangate trek without a guide, but you carry everything: a tent, a sleeping bag for −10 °C, food and stove, plus a GPS track, because some sections are unmarked. You still pay every community fee. If you've never camped above 4,500 m, a guided trek with horses is much safer.
Is there a map of the Ausangate Trek 3 Days route?
The Ausangate Trek 3 Days route runs north to south: Pacchanta (4,330 m) → 7 Lakes loop (up to 4,770 m) → Upis camp (about 4,400 m) → Arapa pass (4,850 m) → Anantapata camp (about 4,700 m) → Rainbow Mountain (5,036 m). Your guide carries the route, and the trail passes community signs at each stop.
What happens if I get altitude sickness on the trek?
If you get altitude sickness on the Ausangate Trek 3 Days, your guide checks your symptoms and gives you emergency oxygen, which goes along every day. Mild headaches often ease with rest and water. If symptoms get worse, the cure is going down, and the guide arranges the safest way back. In groups of more than 5, an emergency horse comes along.

Recomendo demais a empresa. Excelente custo-benefício, equipe muito boa, ótima organização e uma comunicação que realmente faz diferença.

Amazing experience!
An unforgettable 3-day Ausangate trek!
I had an incredible experience on the 3-day Ausangate trek with this company. Every day was filled with breathtaking scenery—from turquoise glacial lakes to stunning mountain landscapes. It was easily one of the highlights of my trip to Peru.
Our guide, Inti, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and made sure everyone felt safe and enjoyed the trek. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does and takes pride in sharing the beauty and history of the region.
A huge thank you to our cook, Esteban. I honestly couldn’t believe the quality and quantity of the food we had while camping in the mountains. Every meal was delicious, and there was always plenty to eat. They also kept us well supplied with water and snacks throughout the trek, which made a big difference.
The entire trip was extremely well organized. The logistics were seamless, allowing us to simply enjoy the adventure without worrying about anything.
I would 100% recommend this company to anyone looking to hike Ausangate. It was a beautiful, unforgettable experience, and I would gladly book with them again. Thank you, Inti, Esteban, and the entire team for making this such an amazing adventure!

Three day Ausangate trek with Saddain
My partner and I set out for a three day Ausangate trip after our trip was delayed because of unexpected sickness. Jonathan was kind enough to send us off a few days later at no extra charge!!! He took care of us while I was sick and made sure I was ok.
Saddain, our guide, was nothing short of exceptional. He made sure we were always feeling well, and even insisted on taking an extra horse in case I wasn't strong enough for the tougher parts of the trail. He was very knowledgeable about the mountain and generally- telling us stories about the Inka, and different Peruvian folklore about the stars. He offered to start our final day extremely early (3 am) so we could get to rainbow mountain before the crowds- a very smart suggestion! We got to experience rainbow mountain nearly empty- something not many people get to experience. He made sure we were always feeling well and was overall a pleasure to be around.
Our cook Angel prepared exceptional meals for us, always adding an extra touch of care (preparing hot water for us to wash our hands before each meal, or preparing two chicken dishes- one spicy and one not- in the same meal). Our horseman was also extremely kind and caring.
Overall an exceptional experience- would recommend Saddain as a guide and Jonathan’s agency to anyone who is looking for an unforgettable experience in the mountains.

Magnificent trek and hard working trek team
We had a magnificent 5 day trek with Ausangate Guide and I would recommend this company to book your trek with. The company were well organised and accommodated our request to avoid rainbow mountain and complete the full circuit in 4 days.
The trek team (Inti and Wilbert) get 5 stars for professionalism, skill and effort.
Our guide Inti was very professional. He looked after us and ensured our needs were met. He passed on lots of his local knowledge about the mountains and the local wildlife which was interesting. We always felt safe and the pace of the trek was matched to our fitness levels.
Our porter and chef worked incredibly hard to transport our gear and ensure we were well fed. The food was basic, but hearty with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and snacks.
The only reason this is not a 5 star review overall is because the sleeping bags were a little small (we are not big people but couldn’t fully zip them up) which made us cold at night. Inti was able to provide extra blankets on one occasion which was much appreciated.
The logistics on the final day could also have been better as we ended up waiting for 4 hours after lunch for a mini bus to take us back to Cusco. We had already visited the hot springs before lunch so a longer final walk or an afternoon activity would have been good.
Overall though this was a great and budget friendly experience. I highly recommend this trek.

We did the 7 lake tour here and it was the best Tour I did around Cusco. I did it with a friend of mine and we had such an amazing time and an amazing tour guide called Tony. He prepared us very well with the information about the tour, the history, it was in general really fun with him and he took care of the whole group.
We drive 3h there, had breakfast and then we got ready for an amazing 6h hike hahaha the views as you can see in the pictures were more than beautiful. The hike itself was nice but I would say on intermediate difficulty. I still recommend it to everyone if you can manage it.
After the hike we ate lunch and to rest our muscles there was a thermal bath nearby 😎 enjoy.
