What's included in your Ausangate 7 Lakes tour

This tour at a glance

The Ausangate 7 Lakes hike is a full-day tour from Cusco to seven glacier-fed lakes at the foot of Ausangate (6,384 m), the highest mountain in the Cusco region. From the village of Pacchanta, you walk a 14 km (8.7 mi) loop that tops out at about 4,770 m (15,650 ft), and you're back at your hotel the same evening.

What's Included?

  • Hotel pickup & drop-off in Cusco: no taxis to arrange at 4:30 AM
  • Round-trip tourist transport to Pacchanta, about 3 hours each way
  • Bilingual guide (English & Spanish) who sets a safe pace for the altitude
  • Buffet breakfast in Pacchanta, so you start the hike with energy
  • Buffet lunch back in Pacchanta after the hike
  • Emergency oxygen & first-aid kit, carried by your guide
  • Support from our team before and on the day of your tour

What's NOT Included?

  • Community entrance fee: S/ 20 per person, cash at the gate
  • Tips for the guide, driver and cook
  • Snacks, drinks and personal expenses
  • Travel insurance (recommended for any hike at high altitude)
  • Optional: Pacchanta hot springs, S/ 5–10 cash
  • Optional: horse rental, S/ 80–120 per horse for the full loop
  • Optional: trekking poles (bring your own or rent them in Cusco)

What to bring

  • Warm layers: thermal base layer, fleece, and a windproof, waterproof jacket
  • Warm hat, gloves and a buff for the freezing early start
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, SPF 50 sunscreen and lip balm
  • Broken-in hiking boots with good grip
  • Rain poncho (essential from December to March)
  • 1.5–2 liters of water and high-energy snacks
  • Cash in soles, in small notes: S/ 20 entrance fee plus extras
  • Swimsuit and a quick-dry towel for the hot springs
  • Personal medication, including altitude medicine if your doctor recommends it
  • A small daypack (15–25 L)

Good to know before you book

  • It's a long day. Pickup is at 4:30 AM and you're back around 6:30 PM; about 6 hours of that are on the road. A neck pillow helps you sleep on the way.
  • Acclimatize at least 3 days. You go from Cusco (3,400 m) to 4,770 m in one morning. If you still have headaches the day before, choose a lower hike first.
  • It's not a beginner's walk. You hike 14 km above 4,300 m. The first 1.5 hours are a steady climb that feels long; after the first lake the trail flattens out.
  • Shared group, mixed paces. Groups often have more than 16 people. Your guide sets a steady pace with breaks, and local horse handlers offer horses at the trailhead (S/ 80–120) if you're unsure.
  • Simple, home-style meals. Breakfast and lunch are simple buffets in Pacchanta. Bring extra snacks.
  • Basic toilets. Toilets are simple, in Pacchanta and at a few points along the route, sometimes for a small fee.
  • The weather decides the colors. In the sun the lakes glow turquoise; under clouds they look darker and the glacier can hide. Rain or snow is possible in any month, especially in the afternoon.
  • Freezing mornings. From May to September it's often below 0 °C (32 °F) at the start, and the vehicle can be cold before sunrise.
  • Cash only, almost no signal. There are no ATMs or card payments in Pacchanta, and mobile signal is weak or nonexistent.
  • Rustic hot springs. They're simple outdoor pools with a view of Ausangate, not a spa, and the changing area is basic.
  • Photos with locals. Women in traditional dress and their llamas often pose for travelers and ask for a small tip. Always ask before taking a photo.
  • Who should skip it. Minimum age is 10, for active teens; hiking experience is a plus. It's not recommended during pregnancy or with heart or serious breathing conditions.

About the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike

WhatsApp Us!

The Ausangate 7 Lakes hike starts in the dark. At 4:30 AM you're picked up at your hotel in Cusco and head south-east along the Vilcanota valley, through Urcos and Ocongate, while most of the group catches up on sleep. Somewhere past Tinki the sky turns pink and the first snow peaks appear.

By 8:00 you're in Pacchanta, a small Quechua village of stone houses and alpaca corrals at 4,330 m, sitting down to a warm breakfast with Ausangate filling the view. Your guide walks you through the route, how to pace yourself and what to do if the altitude starts to bite.

The hike begins at the gate of the Ausangate Private Conservation Area. The first hour and a half is a steady climb up a wide valley, past grazing alpacas and herders' homes, with the glacier growing bigger with every step. Take it slow: this is the hardest part of the day.

Then the first lake comes into view, and the effort suddenly makes sense. From here the trail levels out and the 7 lakes of Ausangate appear one after another, each with its own color and its own community sign. There's time for photos, a snack and a few quiet minutes at the highest point of the circuit, 4,770 m.

The loop then drops gently back to Pacchanta, where lunch is waiting around 1 PM. If you still have energy, soak in the village hot springs facing the mountain. In the afternoon you head back to Cusco and reach your hotel around 6:30 PM: tired, happy, and with seven glacier lakes on your camera.

Meet the 7 Lakes of Ausangate

Every lake on the circuit has a community sign with its Quechua name and altitude. All seven are fed by the glaciers of Ausangate (6,384 m), and minerals, glacial silt, algae and light give each one a different color, even though they're only minutes apart. These are the official names of the Ausangate lakes, in the order you meet them when the loop starts at Hatun Puka Qocha (guides can also walk it the other way, starting at Anqas Qocha), with photos taken by our team.

  1. Hatun Puka Qocha, the big red lake, on the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike in Peru

    Hatun Puka Qocha

    "Big red lake" · also called Puca Cocha · 4,580 m / 15,026 ft

Hatun Puka Qocha is the first lake on the circuit and the larger of the two "red lakes" (hatun means big, puka means red). Iron-rich earth stains its shores a deep rust color, and fine sediment turns the water a milky rose-brown that changes with the light. It's the first stop to catch your breath after the climb from Pacchanta, and the first photo of the day.

  2. Green water ringed by red earth at Huch'uy Puka Qocha, Ausangate 7 Lakes, Peru

    Huch'uy Puka Qocha

    "Little red lake" · 4,620 m / 15,157 ft

Huch'uy Puka Qocha is the "little red lake" (huch'uy means small), the smaller sister of Hatun Puka Qocha. The red in its name comes from the soil around it, not from the water: here the lake itself is green, so you get the strongest color contrast of the circuit, emerald water framed by red earth and grey scree slopes.

  3. Turquoise Oqe Qocha lake below the glaciers of Ausangate on the 7 Lakes hike

    Oqe Qocha

    "Lead-grey lake" · 4,620 m / 15,157 ft

Oqe Qocha is the third lake of the circuit, and its name describes its color: oqe means lead-grey in Quechua. Fed directly by meltwater from Ausangate's glaciers, its water shifts between turquoise and silver-grey as the clouds move. This stretch of the trail gives you some of the closest views of the mountain's ice walls.

  4. Clear green China Uturunku Qocha among ichu grass on the Ausangate 7 Lakes trail

    China Uturunku Qocha

    "Female jaguar lake" · also called China Otorongo · 4,600 m / 15,092 ft

China Uturunku Qocha is named after the uturunku, the jaguar, an animal of power in Andean tradition; china means female. It's one of the smallest lakes on the route: a clear green pool in a hollow of golden ichu grass, so transparent that you can see the stones on its bed. Its twin, Orqo Uturunku Qocha, comes later on the loop.

  5. Ch'uñu Qocha reflecting clouds and snow peaks at the highest point of the 7 Lakes hike

    Ch'uñu Qocha

    Named after ch’uñu, the Andean freeze-dried potato · 4,770 m / 15,650 ft

Ch'uñu Qocha is the highest point of the 7 Lakes circuit, at 4,770 m according to its community sign. It shares its name with ch'uñu, the potato that Andean families freeze-dry in the icy nights of the puna, a technique used in these highlands for centuries. The lake is a small, quiet pond that mirrors the clouds and snow peaks. From here, the rest of the loop is mostly downhill.

  6. Dark teal Orqo Uturunku Qocha reflecting the sky on the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike

    Orqo Uturunku Qocha

    "Male jaguar lake" · also called Orco Otorongo · 4,570 m / 14,993 ft

Orqo Uturunku Qocha, the "male jaguar lake" (orqo means male in Quechua), is the twin of China Uturunku Qocha. Its deep teal water lies between a grey scree slope and golden ichu grass. With still air it reflects the sky like a mirror, so it's worth a slow stop for photos before the last lake.

  7. Anqas Qocha, the blue lake, below the Ausangate glacier on the 7 Lakes hike

    Anqas Qocha

    "Blue lake" · also called Azul Cocha · 4,550 m / 14,928 ft

Anqas Qocha, the "blue lake" (anqas means blue in Quechua), is the last lake of the circuit. It lies right below the glaciers of Ausangate, its shoreline is about 1.7 km long according to Peru's official tourism inventory (MINCETUR), and its water ranges from turquoise to deep blue with the sun. From here the trail heads back down to Pacchanta for lunch.

Ausangate 7 Lakes: your questions answered

What is the altitude of the Ausangate 7 Lakes?

The 7 Lakes of Ausangate sit between 4,550 m and 4,770 m (14,928–15,650 ft) above sea level, according to the community sign at each lake. The highest is Ch'uñu Qocha, at 4,770 m. The hike starts lower, in Pacchanta (about 4,330 m), below Ausangate's 6,384 m summit.

How long is the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike?

The Ausangate 7 Lakes hike (also called the 7 Lakes trek) is a 14 km (8.7 mi) loop that takes 4–5 hours of walking, with about 450 m (1,500 ft) of climbing. It starts and ends in Pacchanta. As a day trip from Cusco, the full day lasts about 14 hours, from 4:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

How hard is the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike? Can beginners do it?

The difficulty of the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike is moderate to hard, mainly because of the altitude: you walk 14 km above 4,300 m. The trail itself is wide and non-technical. Fit beginners can do it if they acclimatize at least 3 days in Cusco. The hardest part is the first 1.5-hour climb; after that it's mostly flat or downhill.

How do I avoid altitude sickness on the 7 Lakes hike?

To avoid altitude sickness on the 7 Lakes hike, spend at least 3 days in Cusco first, drink plenty of water, skip alcohol the night before and walk slowly. Mild headache and breathlessness are common above 4,000 m. Your guide carries emergency oxygen; if symptoms get worse, you turn back and descend.

Where are the 7 Lakes in Cusco, Peru, and how far are they from the city?

The 7 Lakes of Ausangate are in the Ocongate district of Cusco, Peru, about 125 km south-east of Cusco city, roughly a 3-hour drive. The hike starts in Pacchanta, a Quechua village reached via Urcos, Ocongate and Tinki. On this tour, transport from your Cusco hotel is included.

Can I visit the 7 Lakes of Ausangate without a tour?

Yes, you can hike the 7 Lakes of Ausangate without a tour. Take a bus from Cusco to Tinki (2.5–3 hours), then a taxi to Pacchanta, pay the S/ 20 entrance fee and follow the signposted loop. Expect very early buses, no ATMs and no phone signal. Independent hikers report it isn't much cheaper than a tour.

Ausangate 7 Lakes vs Humantay Lake: which is better?

The Ausangate 7 Lakes hike is better if you want variety and fewer people: seven glacier lakes on a 14 km loop. Humantay Lake is better if you want a short hike: one turquoise lake at about 4,200 m, reached by a steep 7 km round trip, but much busier.

Ausangate 7 Lakes vs Rainbow Mountain: which should I choose?

Choose Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca, about 5,036 m) to see the famous striped mountain, with a steep finish and big crowds in high season. Choose the Ausangate 7 Lakes for glaciers, lakes and alpacas with few people, at a lower high point of 4,770 m. Both are full-day trips from Cusco, or you can combine them on our Ausangate Trek 2 Days.

Can I do Rainbow Mountain and the 7 Lakes in one day?

No, Rainbow Mountain and the 7 Lakes of Ausangate can't be combined comfortably in one day: they're on different roads, and each is a full day from Cusco. To see both, choose our Ausangate Trek 2 Days, which links them with a night in Pacchanta, or book two day trips with a rest day between.

When is the best time to visit the 7 Lakes of Ausangate, and what's the weather like?

The best time to visit the 7 Lakes of Ausangate is May to September, the dry season, with clear skies and a firm trail. Mornings are below 0 °C (32 °F) and middays reach 15–20 °C in the sun. From December to March, expect afternoon rain or snow and clouds over the glacier.

How much is the entrance fee to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate?

The entrance fee to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate is S/ 20 per person (2026), paid in cash to the local community at the trail gate. It isn't included in the tour price. The optional Pacchanta hot springs cost about S/ 5–10 more, and there are no ATMs, so bring small notes from Cusco.

Can I rent a horse on the 7 Lakes hike?

Yes, you can rent a horse for the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike. Local families offer them at the trailhead in Pacchanta for S/ 80–120 per horse for the full loop (2026), paid in cash. If you're unsure about the altitude, decide before you start walking.

Is the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike safe?

Yes, the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike is safe for healthy, acclimatized travelers. The trail is non-technical and signposted; the real risks are altitude, cold and sudden weather. Your guide carries emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit, sets the pace and decides when someone must turn back.

Is the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike worth it?

Yes, the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike is one of the most rewarding day hikes in Peru for acclimatized travelers with one free day in Cusco. In one day you see seven glacier lakes of different colors, alpaca herds and Cusco's highest mountain, with far fewer people than at Rainbow Mountain or Humantay. If you just arrived in Cusco, start with a lower hike.

What are the names of the 7 Lakes of Ausangate?

The 7 Lakes of Ausangate, by their official community-sign names, are Hatun Puka Qocha, Huch'uy Puka Qocha, Oqe Qocha, China Uturunku Qocha, Ch'uñu Qocha, Orqo Uturunku Qocha and Anqas Qocha. Is the 7 Lakes trail signposted? Is there a map?

Yes, the 7 Lakes trail is signposted from Pacchanta, every lake has a community sign with its name and altitude, and a large route map stands at the trailhead. The loop can be walked in either direction, starting at Hatun Puka Qocha or at Anqas Qocha. GPS tracks are on Wikiloc; download them first, as signal is weak.

The Ausangate 7 Lakes tour with Ausangate Trek costs $35 per person (2026), including hotel pickup in Cusco, round-trip transport, a bilingual guide, breakfast, lunch and emergency oxygen. We did the 7 lake tour here and it was the best Tour I did around Cusco. I did it with a friend of mine and we had such an amazing time and an amazing tour guide called Tony. He prepared us very well with the information about the tour, the history, it was in general really fun with him and he took care of the whole group. We drive 3h there, had breakfast and then we got ready for an amazing 6h hike hahaha the views as you can see in the pictures were more than beautiful. The hike itself was nice but I would say on intermediate difficulty. I still recommend it to everyone if you can manage it. After the hike we ate lunch and to rest our muscles there was a thermal bath nearby 😎 enjoy.

Recomendo demais a empresa. Excelente custo-benefício, equipe muito boa, ótima organização e uma comunicação que realmente faz diferença.

Magnificent trek and hard working trek team

We had a magnificent 5 day trek with Ausangate Guide and I would recommend this company to book your trek with. The company were well organised and accommodated our request to avoid rainbow mountain and complete the full circuit in 4 days. The trek team (Inti and Wilbert) get 5 stars for professionalism, skill and effort. Our guide Inti was very professional. He looked after us and ensured our needs were met. He passed on lots of his local knowledge about the mountains and the local wildlife which was interesting. We always felt safe and the pace of the trek was matched to our fitness levels. Our porter and chef worked incredibly hard to transport our gear and ensure we were well fed. The food was basic, but hearty with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and snacks. The only reason this is not a 5 star review overall is because the sleeping bags were a little small (we are not big people but couldn’t fully zip them up) which made us cold at night. Inti was able to provide extra blankets on one occasion which was much appreciated. The logistics on the final day could also have been better as we ended up waiting for 4 hours after lunch for a mini bus to take us back to Cusco. We had already visited the hot springs before lunch so a longer final walk or an afternoon activity would have been good. Overall though this was a great and budget friendly experience. I highly recommend this trek.

Amazing experience!

An unforgettable 3-day Ausangate trek! I had an incredible experience on the 3-day Ausangate trek with this company. Every day was filled with breathtaking scenery—from turquoise glacial lakes to stunning mountain landscapes. It was easily one of the highlights of my trip to Peru. Our guide, Inti, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and made sure everyone felt safe and enjoyed the trek. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does and takes pride in sharing the beauty and history of the region. A huge thank you to our cook, Esteban. I honestly couldn’t believe the quality and quantity of the food we had while camping in the mountains. Every meal was delicious, and there was always plenty to eat. They also kept us well supplied with water and snacks throughout the trek, which made a big difference. The entire trip was extremely well organized. The logistics were seamless, allowing us to simply enjoy the adventure without worrying about anything. I would 100% recommend this company to anyone looking to hike Ausangate. It was a beautiful, unforgettable experience, and I would gladly book with them again. Thank you, Inti, Esteban, and the entire team for making this such an amazing adventure!

Ausangate 4j

Even before the trek my father and I got all our questions answered with personal attention. Our guide was amazing and the whole team including the horse man and cook were great. They were thoughtful and flexible and made sure the trek was what we wanted it to be. Beautiful views, highly recommend

Three day Ausangate trek with Saddain

My partner and I set out for a three day Ausangate trip after our trip was delayed because of unexpected sickness. Jonathan was kind enough to send us off a few days later at no extra charge!!! He took care of us while I was sick and made sure I was ok. Saddain, our guide, was nothing short of exceptional. He made sure we were always feeling well, and even insisted on taking an extra horse in case I wasn't strong enough for the tougher parts of the trail. He was very knowledgeable about the mountain and generally- telling us stories about the Inka, and different Peruvian folklore about the stars. He offered to start our final day extremely early (3 am) so we could get to rainbow mountain before the crowds- a very smart suggestion! We got to experience rainbow mountain nearly empty- something not many people get to experience. He made sure we were always feeling well and was overall a pleasure to be around. Our cook Angel prepared exceptional meals for us, always adding an extra touch of care (preparing hot water for us to wash our hands before each meal, or preparing two chicken dishes- one spicy and one not- in the same meal). Our horseman was also extremely kind and caring. Overall an exceptional experience- would recommend Saddain as a guide and Jonathan’s agency to anyone who is looking for an unforgettable experience in the mountains.
