One Day at the Lakes or the Full Ausangate Circuit

The same mountain, the same guides and the same two hot meals a day — what changes is how long you stay out. Walk the seven lagoons and come home the same night, add Rainbow Mountain with a night at Pacchanta, or take three, four or five days around the apu, sleeping in tents above 4,400 m. Why Ausangate Is Worth the Extra Days

Ausangate is the highest mountain in the Cusco region at 6,384 m, and one of the apus — the protective spirits the communities below it still answer to. Around its base sit seven lagoons fed by the glacier, each a different colour, and behind its southern flank the striped ridge of Rainbow Mountain. Almost nobody who visits Cusco walks here, which is precisely the point.

Why the Lakes Change Colour

Why the Lakes Change Colour

Otorongo Macho and Otorongo Hembra, Puca Cocha, Alqa Cocha, Ccomer Cocha, Azul Cocha and Pata Cocha — green, blue, turquoise and one distinctly red. The colour comes from glacial flour, the rock ground to powder by the ice above and suspended in the water, plus the minerals of whichever slope drains into each basin. They sit between roughly 4,600 and 4,800 m on the flank of the Vilcanota range, and on a bright day the contrast between them and the ice is the reason people come.

What the Trail Is Actually Like

The walking

What the Trail Is Actually Like

None of it is technical — no scrambling, no exposure, no rope. What makes it hard is the altitude and the distance: the day tour walks a few gentle hours out and back from Pacchanta, while the treks cover 6 to 16 km a day and cross passes at 4,750, 4,870, 5,070 and 5,096 m. Pack horses carry seven kilos per person between camps, so you walk with a daypack, and on the treks an emergency horse comes along whenever the group is larger than five.

Fed on the Mountain

Every route includes buffet breakfast and lunch, and the treks add a cooked dinner each night and a cook who carries the kitchen with the horses. Tell us when you book if you are vegetarian. The other thing worth planning for is Pacchanta: its natural thermal pools sit at the foot of the glacier, they are medicinal according to everyone who lives there, and after fourteen kilometres at altitude nobody argues. Bring swimwear.

Why Book With Us

Why Walk Ausangate With an Andean Guide

Above 4,300 m, for days at a time, the difference between a great trek and a miserable one is almost entirely down to how it is run. Here is what you get on our departures.

Oxygen on every departure

An oxygen tank and a first-aid kit travel with the group, and the guide is trained to use both. On a route that spends days above 4,500 m that is not a luxury.

Guides from these valleys

Licensed high mountain guides who grew up at altitude, speak Spanish and English, and read how a group is coping long before anyone says anything.

Horses carry the weight

Seven kilos per person moved between camps, plus an emergency horse on groups over five. You walk with a daypack, not a full expedition load.

Camps that are already up

Tents, −5 °C sleeping bags and a cook who has dinner going before you arrive. You finish the stage and sit down.
